This powerful play centres on the experiences of eight Irish men who volunteer to serve in the 36th (Ulster) Division at the beginning of the First World War. Moving from the home front to the trenches, the play reaches a climax at the start of the terrible battle of the Somme.

This play is a co-production between Tara Players, Ottawa's Irish theatre company and Ottawa Little Theatre

 

About the play

Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme, is perhaps one of Frank McGuinness's most respected plays. The Irish dramatist's work received several awards and accolades, most notably the London Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright. It was first staged in the Peacock Stage of the renowned Abbey Theatre, in Dublin in 1985.

Tom’s previous directorial endeavors at OLT include Snake in the Grass, Dancing at Lughnasa, The Drawer Boy (Ottawa Critics’ Choice - Best Production 2006); and The Subject Was Roses.  Prior to that, Tom was very active as an actor and director with Tara Players.  His directing credits include: Da, A Life, Say Cheese, The Loves of Cass McGuire,  Philadelphia Here I Come and The  Freedom of the City.
