Synopsis:
Romantic Comedy begins on the wedding day of Jason Carmichael. He is a successful Broadway playwright whose writing partner of 10 years has abruptly left to go to Hollywood leaving Jason in an anxious state. Entering into the scene is a mousy Vermont school teacher with visions of becoming a writer. What follows is a multi-year collaboration which keeps everyone guessing whether there will be a romance between them.

Cast of Characters:
The action occurs over a 14-year period. Stage age of actors is at the beginning of the show.

JASON CARMICHAEL – Mid-thirties, successful Broadway playwright whose writing partner has just left to go to Hollywood. Impeccably attired (dressing gown, ascot, slacks, slippers). He is not conventionally handsome but, despite his crumpled face, possesses a mixture of arrogance, charm and sophistication which gives him a certain magnetism. This part involves kissing and affectionate touching. It also involves the appearance of nudity.

BLANCHE DAILEY – Flamboyant in manner and dress, she admits to forty-two, looks fiftyish, is actually fifty-four. Thrice married, an ex-showgirl but for many years a literary agent, she’s nobody’s fool. (Can be played older.)

PHOEBE J CRADDOCK – Stage age: mid-twenties. Originally a school teacher from Vermont, she dresses down and hides her natural prettiness. She is inclined to cover her basic shyness with a somewhat self-conscious, forthright manner: she overthinks and over-talks. This part involves kissing and affectionate touching.

ALLISON ST. JAMES – Jason’s Fiancée/wife. Blond(ish), beautiful and friendly with an open and direct manner. Mid-twenties. This part involves kissing.

LEO JANOWITZ – Mid-thirties, unruly hair, rumpled suit and has a serious, reserved demeanor that almost masks a very dry sense of humour. He is in love with Phoebe. His speech has the rough edges of the street and he tends to cut through to the core of things. This part involves kissing and affectionate touching.

KATE MALLORY – Late-thirties, a soft pretty woman with a deceptively gentle, feminine manner and sweet smile. She has absolutely no sense of humour.
