EODL 1938 Regional Festival (full-length) and Dominion Drama Festival entry
"The Petrified Forest" was selected as the ODL entry into the Eastern Ontario Drama Festival held Mar. 17-19, 1938, in Kingston, where it was performed on March 18. Adjudicator Malcolm Morley awarded it Best Production and Best Actor (Arthur Clare).
"The Petrified Forest" was subsequently chosen as one of 16 plays for entry into the Dominion Drama Festival which took place in Winnipeg, Manitoba, May 16-21, 1938, the first time the festival had been hosted outside Ottawa. It was performed in the 1,800-seat Walker Theatre on May 17, one of the first four full-length productions ever to be presented in the DDF Finals.
The adjudicator was the Toronto-born New York critic Barrett H. Clark. Although he singled out Mary Laidlaw and Dale MacDonald for honorable mentions from among the 200 actors, "The Petrified Forest" came up short in the awards.
