EODL 1937 Regional Festival (one-act) and Dominion Drama Festival entries
"Release" was an original play by Ottawa playwright Luke Stewart based on the Moose River mine disaster of 1936.
"Release" and these two other one-act plays were performed in Ottawa prior to travelling to Kingston to compete in the Eastern Ontario Regional finals of the Dominion Drama Festival on Feb. 11-13.
Adjudicator M. George de Warfaz selected Barbara Eason as Best Actress and Dale MacDonald as Best Actor for their performances in "The First and the Last". "Release" was named second best play of the Festival and received an invitation to be one of the 19 one-act plays (five by Canadians) performed at the Dominion Drama Festival held in Ottawa from April 26 to May 1, 1937. It opened the festival along with two other one-act plays on opening night April 26, but was ultimately shut out of the awards.
