The Ottawa Little Theatre hosted the English section of the Eastern Ontario Regional Drama Festival, one of the largest in recent years with five full-length plays and three one-act plays. The adjudicator was John Allen, from Britain.
The OLT entries were "Point of Departure" opening the festival on Jan. 13 (for cast and crew, see Feb. 17, 1953); "The Madwoman of Chaillot" (presented by the Saturday Players - for cast and crew, see Feb. 5-14, 1953) and "Rise and Shine" (a winner of the One-Act Playwriting Competition presented by the Workshop - for cast and crew, see Nov. 13-15, 1952).
"The Madwoman of Chaillot" won the Calvert Trophy for Best Production, as well as Best Actor for Richard Lamb; "Rise and Shine" won the Fulford Shield for Best One-Act Play; and Florence Fancott won Best Actress for "Point of Departure".
As Best Production winner, "The Madwoman of Chaillot" was chosen to represent the OLT at the Dominion Drama Festival in Victoria, BC, in May 1953 where Andrée Cunningham won the Best Actress Award, while Ruth Addleman and Bruce Swerdfager won Best Supporting Actress and Actor.
