This reading of Act III of Heartbreak House took place shortly after the New York premiere of Shaw's play earlier the same month. The evening included a resume of the play by Arma Smillie plus a resume of The Cherry Orchard by Mrs. Ralph Brown, and a discussion of comparisons between the two.
League President J.F. Crowdy (apparently agreeing with the NY critics) said, "It is merely a question of words - very brilliant words, but it is like trying to form into one whole the constituent parts of the hash of common domesticity. Shaw has the weaknesses that spoiled Aristophanes, and little of his greatness. I have read the play four times, and I do not understand it."
