This production was OLT's entry into the Eastern Ontario Regional Drama Festival, which was hosted in Kingston March 4-8, 1969. When Leonard Holt took ill, Johni Keyworth took over the title role nine days before the EODL performance, and two days later Kevin Conlon took over as director.
Festival adjudicator Marigold Charlesworth gave the play high praise. It won the Dominion Drama Festival Trophy for Best Production, and Johni Keyworth won Best Actor. The Best Director award went to David Morley in spite of Kevin Conlon's involvement in bringing the production to the festival.
Its Best Production win made "The Caretaker" eligible for consideration as the Ontario entry into the Dominion Drama Festival taking place in Kelowna, BC, in May 1969, but it was not one of the six chosen by the DDF adjudicators for the final competition.
This was the first time since 1963 that OLT had entered a production in either the Full-Length or the One-Act EODL Festivals. And it would be the last time until 2002 when entries into the One-Act Festival began again.
