EODL 1949 Regional Festival (full-length) and Dominion Drama Festival entry
"Fortune, My Foe" was the first full-length Canadian play presented by the Ottawa Drama League on its regular season in many years. It had premiered just months before (August 1948) in Kingston, Ontario, produced by Arthur Sutherland's International Players. Robertson Davies had already been a two-time winner of the ODL's National Playwriting Competition with "Overlaid" in 1946, and "Eros for Breakfast in 1947".
"Fortune My Foe" was repeated on February 12, 1949, at the Little Theatre in an elimination round for the honour of representing the ODL at the Eastern Ontario Regional Drama Festival (English section) held in Brockville (Feb 17-19).
"Fortune My Foe" prevailed over the Junior Theatre's "Toad of Toad Hall" and was thus performed again at the Festival on February 19, 1949. There it won Best Production and Best Actor (W.A. Atkinson).
As Best Production winner, it was selected for entry into the Dominion Drama Festival held April 26-30, 1949, at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto where it was performed on April 29, 1949. "Fortune My Foe" was awarded the Sir Barry Jackson Trophy for Best Presentation of a Canadian Play.
