Synopsis:
Avery Sutton is coming home after 8 long years to introduce his fiance to his eccentric extended family. The Sutton home is a bit of a madhouse (but in the best possible way) and Avery must find a way to balance the desire to be his “own man” with the love he has for his demanding, outrageous family. This is a very fast comedy and provides the audience with endless surprises and tender moments. Who are the Suttons? The script says it best: “they turned away from the real world because the real world hurt too much.”

Character Descriptions:
37 Postcards requires a very cohesive ensemble cast, so the auditions will be focusing on assembling a group of performers who work well together. This being the case, you may be asked to read for several different characters. Please note that the set will be tilted at an angle and you must be comfortable with the physical demands that this entails. We will tell you more about this at the audition.

AVERY SUTTON (25 to 35 years old)
Avery is likable, intelligent, and a bit shy. He is easily overwhelmed by his outrageous family. He has been on a journey to try and discover who he is and where he belongs in the world. He and Gillian are engaged to be married and he is madly in love with her. But now he must introduce her to his family.

GILLLIAN MOORE (25 to 35 years old)
Gillian is Avery’s fiancé. She is somewhat pretentious, theatrical, and easily wooed by extravagance. In the script, she is aptly described as “a rhinestone desperate to be a diamond.” They were engaged after just two months. You get the picture.

EVELYN SUTTON (45 to 60 years old)
Married to Stanford, Evelyn is a sensible, outgoing, attractive woman with a lovely disposition and a terrible memory. She can be infuriatingly positive and tends to avoid all negativity. In fact, she seems unwilling to confront any sort of reality that isn’t pleasant and appealing.

STANFORD P. SUTTON (45 to 60 years old)
Stanford is an attractive middle-aged man. He is vibrant and extremely likable. An avid golfer, he is in remarkably good shape for his age and bounds through life with gleeful abandon. Alas, there is a dark cloud hanging above him: he is dying of leukemia. He has decided to forego aggressive treatment and enjoy his last days on his own terms.

AUNT ESTER (40+ years old)
Aunt Ester is a lovely, generous woman who shares the house with Stanford and Evelyn. She has accidentally found her way into the phone sex trade, where she enthusiastically gives her customers exactly what they pay her for. Ester is perhaps the most grounded of the folk who occupy the Sutton house.

NANA (65+ years old)
Nana should present as quite old. She uses a walker or cane. She is hard of hearing and visually impaired. She is, however, a remarkable sight, always exquisitely dressed in every luxurious item she can get her hands on. She is dour and unpleasant and swears like a trucker.

Audition Sides:
Excerpts from the script will be provided at the time of the audition. You will likely be asked to read more than one scene.

I think we’ve covered everything. See you on March 1st!
