Synopsis:
Stag and Doe. Jack and Jill. Buck and Doe. A wedding social. And, in some very special places, a Shag. Unique to Canada, and particularly Manitoba and Ontario, a Stag and Doe is not meant to be a combined Bachelor and Bachelorette party. The primary purpose of a Stag and Doe is to turn a profit.
Bonnie and Brad are having a Stag and Doe to raise money for their upcoming wedding—the cost of which has secretly gotten out of control. Their wisecracking Maid of Honour, Dee, is still getting over being left at the altar seven years ago—and now she has to come face-to-face with her ex. Bridezilla Mandy and her doting groom Rob are getting married today—even though their big white tent blew away in last night’s storm. And oh yeah…single dad Jay just found out his entire catering staff is in jail! It’s all happening at the same time, in the same community hall kitchen, in the same small town.
Taking place over one eventful Saturday in June, the two couples strike a deal to share the local reception hall for their Stag and Doe and wedding. Among the unset Jell-o shots, a missing wedding cake, and a disastrous first dance, past relationships are examined, current couples are put to the test, and new romance blossoms.
By turns wildly funny and unexpectedly touching, Stag and Doe offers a look at a distinctly rural Canadian prenuptial tradition…and shines a light on the nature of love, marriage, and weddings.
Character Descriptions
All characters are in their mid-20s to mid-30s.
BONNIE
Our Bride to Be, Bonnie is down-to-earth, hardworking and grounded woman comes face to face with the pressure of a lifetime of This Is Your Once In A Lifetime Day messaging, resulting in a dress purchase that blows the limited budget entirely out of the water. Her fiancé, Brad, is not aware of this purchase at the outset of the play. Her fervent hope is that tonight’s Stag and Doe party will put the budget back on track.
BRAD
An equally down-to-earth, hardworking guy, Brad is a small-town farmer, an occupation that is more passion than payday. A good man of simple tastes, Brad tends to see the world more in black and white than shades of grey.
DEE
Bonnie’s best friend, she is smart and witty, she rolls with the punches and finds a way to make things work. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride, except almost once: she was left at the altar when her groom ran away with another woman.
ROB
Today’s groom, entirely under the thumb of his bride, Mandy, even, perhaps especially, when he pretends not to be. Rob is the utter cad who left Dee standing at the altar. Time has not strengthened his backbone.
MANDY
In the Urban Dictionary, under Bridezilla, there is an 8×10 glossy of Mandy. She is the woman with whom that cad Rob ran away. Today is Mandy’s wedding day. Oh, yes, Rob is to be there too, a wedding always needs a groom. Used to getting her way, she will in no way accept that other people may have other plans and needs.
JAY
The caterer for Mandy’s wedding, he is both juggling geese and spinning the plates trying to keep them all in the air. Jay is a caring single dad who gets the job done somehow, no matter the odds against it.
