Recognizing exceptional volunteers with the Cornerstone

At the Ottawa Little Theatre (OLT) we our proud that we are truly a community theatre run by hundreds of volunteers a year. We have several ways to recognize the time, talent, and dedication of these volunteers. We recognize our contributions by listing volunteers in the program, casts write cards during shows, we give OLT pins to new volunteers on closing nights, we hold Volunteer Appreciation Nights, we had Hogan’s Heroes, the President’s medal is awarded at every show, and we have the illustrious Cornerstone.

As part of its 100th Season Celebrations in 2012-13, the OLT introduced the Cornerstone to recognize and acknowledge the contribution made by select volunteers who have gone above and beyond to make the OLT the thriving community organization that it is today; they are the human cornerstones of the theatre.

The first ten volunteers were inducted into the Cornerstone on August 25, 2013, as part of the final event of OLT’s 100th Season. For the next seven years, up to five outstanding volunteers have had their names added to this illustrious group. They are chosen from nominations submitted by current and past volunteers, members, and subscribers. Nominees are people who have made an extraordinary contribution to the development of the Ottawa Little Theatre through their work as volunteers over a very long period, typically at least 20 years. Cornerstone Inductions went into hiatus during and following the Covid pandemic but returned in 2024.

2024 Inductees:

Nancy Hogan has been an OLT volunteer for 56 years, clearly demonstrating her commitment to excellence as a passionate, reliable, patient, creative, energetic, positive, helpful, compassionate and organized team player.

Nancy started volunteering in 1968 as a costume assistant while still in high school, and is now credited with 87 productions since 1978 as costume designer, assistant director and AD mentor, costume assistant/dresser, props crew, pinrail, and hospitality. But in truth, she has worked on many more since she is often the support behind OLT’s costume designers, and for 19 years, Nancy also supported her husband Jim Hogan (Cornerstone 2017), OLT’s stage manager, remaining on call until he knew he had the correct number of crew. Together, they introduced brunches before the Sunday matinees as a means of encouraging crew to give up a weekend afternoon, a tradition that continues thanks to volunteers.

She is the Chair of SWAG (the Special Wardrobe Advisory Group) that meets twice a week to repair, label, sort and cull the massive costume collection and to assess donations, matching the volunteers to their interests. She leads the team in helping with costume loans to other regional groups and organizing periodic Wardrobe Sales that attract huge crowds to the theatre. Other contributions have included making fudge to help the theatre pay off its mortgage after the 1970 fire, volunteering for Front of House and cloakroom, and stuffing envelopes for subscription mailings long before the internet and email! For OLT’s 75th Anniversary, she edited the OLT’s cookbook – no mean task- and for the 100th Anniversary in 2012-13 she organized the foyer Volunteer Exhibit. She chaired the Volunteer Committee from 2012 to 15, when the concept of attaching a Volunteer Liaison to each show was introduced, and she has sat on the OLT Board of Directors Nominating Committee since 2015.

From Noises Off in 1997 to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time in 2024, Peggy Laverty has contributed to the success of 87 or more of Ottawa Little Theatre’s dazzling plays, and many others around the region. She is principally recognized as a costume designer but has contributed in other ways as well.

Peggy Laverty’s great drive, energy and ability to capture the look of each character through her costumes is extraordinary.  She often borrows from her own vast vintage clothing and costume collection including originals from the 1900s and onward, which she started when she lived in Montreal renowned for its garment district. Her costume designs have reflected the period and enhanced the mood of seventy OLT productions. She works with each of her directors, sometimes on three to four productions per year, defining the qualities and histories of multiple characters often with many costume changes.

Not only is she recognized for her costume design artistry, but she has also mentored other costume designers and shared her skills at hair designing, set dressing and as a knowledgeable wardrobe mistress.  Rounding out her resume at the OLT, Peggy has volunteered on sound and properties crews and has even acted in two productions.

The Capital Critics Circle nominated Peggy for Best Design (Community) for her costumes in Snake in the Grass Alan Ayckbourn in 2009.

Peggy’s craft has been immortalized by photographers Maria Vartanova, Tina Prud’homme and the late Alan Dean.

Venetia Lawless made her OLT debut in 1985 at age 14 as an extra in Who’s Who and performed young people’s roles for the next few years, including Mercy in The Crucible (1988). She has performed in 23 plays to date including Other Desert Cities (2017) winning the Capital Critics Best Actor Award, and Dead Accounts (2018) winning both EODL and Theatre Ontario Festival acting awards.

Venetia made her OLT directing debut in 2013 With Skin Flick and has helmed nine shows to date including Burn (2022), the one-act version of which she subsequently produced at the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. There it won the Carol Tambor Incentive Award and was shortlisted for the prestigious Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award.

In 2018 Venetia directed An Act of Grace for entry into the EODL One-Act Festival, winning multiple awards including Best Production. She joined a new production of the play in 2024 for the OLT mainstage, this time in the titular role, which she then performed in and co-produced for a sold out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2024.

Venetia has also worked backstage over the years in many roles including Assistant to the Director, Associate Director, and has recently stepped into set design. Her co-design for Murder on the Orient Express (2024, which she also co-directed) won multiple EODL awards including for set design.

Venetia has raised over $20,000 over the years, including $9000 for the Calendar Girls calendar she produced to benefit the Cancer Society and OLT when directing that play in 2016; over $5000 selling speciality hot chocolate for Christmas shows, and $6000 for a Comedy Night. Venetia founded and organizes the Spotlight Gallery which features OLT-connected artists in an exhibit every month. She has chaired the OLT’s Volunteer Committee for many years, first in 2009, and more recently from 2017 to now. Venetia became a member of the Board of Directors following the death of her beloved husband Geoff Gruson (OLT Board President) in 2023.

Jim McNabb has had a profound impact and made many outstanding contributions to the success of the OLT through more than 48 years of volunteer work in the areas of acting, directing, community outreach, theatre training and education from 1970 to 2018.

Jim has been a drama teacher (Canterbury High School, Algonquin College, OLT) and a professional and community theatre actor and director, playing roles in OLT’s TartuffeVisiting Mr. Green, and Trying among others. He made his OLT debut in the first season after the 1970 fire playing an octogenarian holocaust survivor in Don’t Drink the Water. He delivered compelling performances in 12 productions, captivating audiences and receiving critical acclaim.  Jim’s portrayal of complex characters without question elevated the standard of performances at OLT. Though Jim became a professional actor, he continued to volunteer with OLT and kindly donated his Canadian Actors Equity Association fees back into the OLT.  Some of Jim’s professional acting credits include: A Woman Hunted (2003), Rudy: The Giuliani Story (2003) and The professor and the blind girl (2009).

As a director, Jim McNabb is “one of the VERY Best!” according to the many OLT alumni who have worked with him over the years. His productions are highly regarded for their strong performances, collaborative and inclusive environment, and innovative staging. Jim was also instrumental in implementing mentorship programs for new actors and crew members. Jim directed his first OLT production, 13 Rue d’Lamour, in 1982 and has since directed a total of 16 OLT plays including The Constant Wife, And Then There Were NoneThe Hollow, Blithe Spirit and the multi award-winning Half Life.

Jim’s extraordinary contributions and dedication to the OLT have left a lasting legacy.

Julia MacBrien, born in 1909, made her debut with the Ottawa Drama League (as OLT was then known) in 1928 in Mary the Third. She appeared in a total of 31 plays until 1954, most notably as Juliet in 1933 in Romeo and Juliet opposite Lord Duncannon, son of Canada’s 14th Governor General. It was performed in both Ottawa and Montreal.

Julia made her directorial debut in 1933 with Will Shakespeare, chosen for entry into that year’s inaugural edition of the nation-wide Dominion Drama Festival, and in 1934, Marco Millions won the second highest award for English plays at that year’s DDF. The Enchanted (1951) won Best Production and Best Director. She directed 48 plays in all.

Julia (who became Julia Murphy when she married in 1935) was a member of the Board of Directors from 1936 to 1938, and from1952 to 1954. In 1936 she was one of co-founders of The Workshop, and in 1948, Julia together with Amelia Hall and Marion Taylor founded the Junior Theatre co-directing seven productions in different schools first season. The Workshop continued until the early 1960s, and the Junior Theatre, or Theatre for Children, until 1985.

Julia Murphy also took on lighting design, choreography, set design, music, props and stage management. She taught drama at Elmwood Girls School and directed productions for various other theatres in Ottawa. One of these was the pageant Like a Mighty Army at the Coliseum in 1935 (when she was 26) with a cast of 350 plus 300 choristers, seen by over 7,000 people. She became an adjudicator for the Ottawa City Drama Festival, and other theatre festivals in town.

Julia Murphy began directing for the National Film Board and moved to Montreal when their offices were relocated. In 1957 she became the director of the Montreal Repertory Theatre until it closed in 1961.

2019 Inductees:


Ian Fellows (pictured here in Separate Tables, 1959) was an actor, director and Ottawa Little Theatre Board member from 1945 to 1970. He is described as “an actor who could, and did, leave audiences spellbound. His acting abilities were always on a professional level, and he brought that same level of talent to the many productions he directed for OLT.”
His first of many roles was in Fanny and the Servant Problem in 1945. He was also one of the original members of the Junior Theatre founded right after the Second World War which eventually evolved into OLT’s renowned Theatre for Children. In 1947 he played Aristophanes in Eros at Breakfast by Robertson Davies, which had won the National Playwriting Competition. The production won Best Production of a Canadian play at the Dominion Drama Festival and was chosen to represent Canada at the third edition of the prestigious Edinburgh Festival in 1949.
Ian spent the next four years touring and studying acting and directing throughout the Commonwealth. On his return to Canada, he became a member of the prestigious Canadian Repertory Theatre in Ottawa alongside William Shatner, Amelia Hall, William Hutt, and Christopher Plummer. When the CRT ended, he co-founded the Theatre Foundation of Ottawa to help sustain interest in and sponsor professional theatre. At the same time, he was back at the OLT working both on and off stage. Ian was as brilliant a teacher as he was a performer and director, organizing and teaching master classes. He was very involved in the idea for and development of the OLT’s Theatre Under the Stairs, an intimate experimental performance space in the basement of the old theatre, that ran from 1959 until 1964.
Ian served as a member of the OLT Board of Directors throughout the 1960s, and at the same time became well-known and respected for his career as a producer of weekly radio dramas for CBC Ottawa. Ian Fellows’ final OLT production was in 1969 when he directed The Three Sisters.
2019 - Rich Little
Rich Little acted in 20 plays over eight seasons at the OLT before going on to become the internationally acclaimed comedian/impressionist known as “The Man of a Thousand Voices” and our most famous alumnus. Rich often credited the OLT for the training he received, saying “Everything I know about acting was developed from those early years.”
Rich (who was always billed at the OLT as Dick Little or Richard Little) made his OLT debut as Ben in Father of the Bride in 1955. His performance as Bo Decker in Bus Stop (1960) won him the Eastern Ontario Drama Festival Best Actor award while the play won Best Production. His 20 plays included several Children’s Theatre productions. His final OLT production was A Button Missing in 1963 by Ottawa writer George Blackburn which broke box office records.
Rich Little made his American TV debut in 1964 on the Judy Garland Show after being discovered by Mel Torme. He became a regular on variety and talk shows, best known for his impressions of Johnny Carson, Richard Nixon and Jimmy Stewart. One of his hit recordings (made into a TV special) was his version of A Christmas Carol in which he performed all 21 roles as different celebrities. In 1974, he was named Comedy Star of the Year by the American Guild of Variety Artists. He got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1983 and was in the inaugural group of inductees to Canada’s Walk of Fame in 1998.
Rich Little continued to support the OLT from afar. In 1970 after the old theatre was destroyed in a catastrophic fire, he made an appearance from Las Vegas on a CBC Special to show OLT’s historic role in the community and its importance to Canadian theatre. In 1971, he co-hosted a CJOH telethon in support of the OLT rebuilding fund, and in 1987 contributed a recipe to the OLT’s 75th anniversary cookbook. In 2013, Rich Little returned to the OLT in his one-man show as a fundraiser in honour of the OLT’s 100th anniversary.
Rich still quips that some people think the Ottawa Little Theatre is named after him!
2019 - David Magladry
David Magladry has been a volunteer at OLT since Man of La Mancha which opened the 1976-77 season. In that first season, he worked on stage crew, properties crew, sound crew, and by the end of that season he did his first sound design.
David’s first lighting design was for Lettice and Lovage in 1995. He never looked back and to date has done over 70 lighting designs for OLT and is also much in demand at professional theatres around town. His skills in this area are legendary and greatly prized by the directors who can find their way into his busy schedule. He can work magic both on stage and off, sometimes rushing in to solve an emergency that has others stumped.
More recently David began designing sets for OLT the first of which was The Perils of Persephone in 2014.
In 2019 David joined the OLT staff as Technical and Production Support and got off to a flying start repairing and replacing many aging technical systems backstage and in the booth. David Magladry is still adding to his 40-plus year history with the OLT.
2019 - Eddie Nunn
In the history of the Ottawa Little Theatre, no other person’s career spanned as many years as Eddie Nunn’s. Eddie acted in his first play in 1936, and performed his last at age 85 in 1992 for a total of 62 plays in seven different decades.
Eddie’s major involvement in productions was as an actor, but occasionally he contributed as director, assistant to the director, stage manager, assistant stage manager and sound effects. He sat on the Board of Directors for a total of nine seasons mainly in the 1960s. He was also a member of the Executive Committee of the Workshop for six seasons in the 1940s serving as Treasurer for five of those seasons. He was very active as an organizer of the Workshop’s monthly meetings which, during the war, often involved skits and “concert parties” to entertain the troops at various bases in the community. Eddie was frequently the host and the producer of the informal improvisations and playlets.
Eddie was a member of Annual Playwriting Competition Board from the early 1940s to the 80s with a brief stint as Chair in 1945. A gifted calligrapher, he also used to produce the certificates given to the winners.
In addition to the OLT, Eddie was also very active in the Ottawa Presbytery YPU (Young People’s Union), directing, producing and adjudicating youth productions. In the 1950s he was Chair of the Fisher Park Community Theatre and acted in many productions there as well. He also performed with Orpheus Society over many years.

2018 Inductees:

2018 - Bruce Feather
Bruce Feather first came to Ottawa from Newfoundland with his wife Jean in 1949 and from then on they both took an active role in the arts community. Bruce was an actor in 77 plays at the Ottawa Little Theatre over 35 years beginning with The Two Mrs. Carrolls in 1949 (he was in five plays that first season alone!). If there was a court scene in a production, Bruce was in it; he took whatever role was necessary. Some of his most memorable include Arthur Winslow in The Winslow Boy, Colonel Pickering in Pygmalion, the title roles in Macbeth and In the Matter of J. Robert Oppenheimer, Toby Belch in Twelfth Night, and James Tyrone in Long Day’s Journey into Night.
Besides acting, Bruce directed two productions – The Knight of the Burning Pestle and The Potting Shed – and wrote the original scores for two children’s productions. Bruce also sang in musicals at the Orpheus Society and performed and sang in many Church Liturgies. He joined ACTRA Ottawa in 1962, and his last television role was Jacob Marley in the televised production of OLT’s A Christmas Carol.
Bruce’s dedication to the Ottawa Little Theatre was profound. “If I am needed, I will serve,” he said – on stage or behind the scenes. He was a Chartered Accountant who served on the OLT board for 23 years as Vice President and Treasurer. As such, he managed the finances of the theatre through the period that included the fire of 1970, the two years of rebuilding that followed, and the retirement of the debt over the five following years. He prepared a financial report for every board meeting even when he could not attend. He also served as Houseman for most of those years.
“But it was at the AGMs that Bruce really came into his own. His reports as treasurer were presented in such a way that they were performances unto themselves. His voice would rise to a climax of joy when talking about profits, and then would descend into doom and gloom with the losses. The audience would clap and cheer just as in a play.” (from the ACTRA obituary by Sybil Cooke)
In July 1984, Bruce was playing the lead role of Canon Fennefather in Murder on the Nile when in the night following the opening performance, he took ill and died of a heart attack. He was 71.
2018 - Sarah Hearn
Sarah Hearn has been a volunteer at OLT continuously since 1990, and is a consistently sought-after director and actor. Her first role was Beatrice Voysey in The Voysey Inheritance in 1990, and her most recent in 2017 was Abby Brewster in Arsenic and Old Lace. She has now performed in 27 productions playing a multitude of characters in a variety of accents.
She almost immediately began working backstage as well, beginning with prompter and properties crew for Beyond Reasonable Doubt in 1991. Other positions have included properties designer, stage crew, wardrobe assistant, stage crew chief, and front of house. She frequently steps up whenever extra help is needed.
Sarah directed her first play The Unexpected Guest in 1995, and she has now been at the helm of 21 productions, most recently the successful 2018 production of A Streetcar Named Desire. Sarah often chooses new talent for her casts and crews, mentoring and encouraging inexperienced actors so that they frequently become regulars with OLT. She also fosters and encourages diversity whenever possible. Sarah was the recipient of the Best Director and People’s Choice awards for The Dershowitz Protocol, OLT’s entry into the EODL Festival in 2006.
Sarah has somehow also found the time to act and direct at other theatres in Ottawa including Tara Players, Eddie May Mysteries, Kanata Theatre, and Toto Too, winning the Capital Critics Award as Best Director for the latter’s production of Torch Song Trilogy in 2017.
Sarah has taken on a number of key governance roles for the OLT over the years. She was a member of the Board from 1995 to 2000, when she also chaired the Play Reading Committee. She continues to serve on the Season Planning Committee, and has probably read and rated at least 1000 plays! She chaired the Artistic Committee from 2009 to 2011, and continues to be a member of the Volunteer Committee, which she chaired from 2015-2017.
2018 - Ken McGill
Ken McGill began his involvement with OLT in 1952 after returning to Canada from England. He started as a member of stage, lighting and set execution crews before serving as assistant stage manager to Bill Atkins. He was primarily a lighting designer, filling this role for 31 productions, and working on lighting crew for another 22. He even ventured on stage as an actor on six occasions. Other areas included props, wardrobe and stage art.
During the 1970 post-fire rebuilding period, Ken worked tirelessly to raise funds for OLT. For the Christmas craft fair he constructed Christmas wreaths during the performances for orders taken pre-show and intermission. He and his elves would have the custom order wreaths ready by curtain time.
Ken was a member of the Board of Directors from 1977 until 1980 when he joined the staff as the OLT’s Stage Manager continuing until 2002. During his stage management years, he tirelessly promoted the OLT and encouraged and supported backstage volunteers, always lending a helping hand whenever needed.
Ken’s baking was legendary. Cast and crew looked forward to his greenroom treats and what he called “Food for Forty” on party nights. His successor as Stage Manager, Jim Hogan, declared Ken to be “the most generous man I have ever known.” His passing in 2004 marked the end of an era at OLT.
2018 - Lorraine St Laurent
Lorraine St. Laurent got her start at the Ottawa Little Theatre in 1964 as prompter for Rashomon, and made her acting debut the following year as the Red Queen in a Theatre for Children production of Alice in Wonderland. She performed in 25 productions including Last of the Red Hot Lovers, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Summer and Smoke, Don’t Despair, Fonctionnaire, The Voysey Inheritance and The Cocktail Hour, making her final stage appearance as Lady Catherine de Bourgh in Pride and Prejudice in 1997.
Lorraine made her directorial debut in 1983 with Happy Birthday directing a total of 16 plays over the next two decades. These included My Three Angels, Barefoot in the Park, The Sunshine Boys, Wuthering Heights, Little Women, and Pygmalion. Her final OLT play was Gigi, which she directed in 2003. Throughout these years she worked backstage in a variety of positions including properties crew, wardrobe assistant, prompting, makeup design and crew, stage crew, and assistant to the director.
She served on the Board of Directors for four years including the portfolios of Secretary and the National Playwriting Competition.
Lorraine also directed for Orpheus and for local dinner theatre. She was a great mentor, and over the years countless directors, actors and patrons benefited from her patience, kindness, talent and skill.
2018 - Stan White - set designer on set of East Lynne
Stan White, a noted Ottawa architect (shown here on the set for East Lynne, 1955), was a prolific and multi-talented addition to the membership of the Ottawa Little Theatre, starting with set design for Two Gentlemen of Soho in 1950. His designs were always remarkable; not only outstanding to look at, they always provided exceptionally fine playing areas to work in. He was a key player in the distinct shift of the theatre to a more modern, contemporary look and style of programming. His skills as a strong actor and a truly fine director ensured that every production he took part in was first class; he often combined his directorial skills with his set design talents to great advantage and critical acclaim.
Productions which he both directed and designed include Teach Me How to Cry (1956), Season in the Sun (1958), Dark of the Moon (1959), Wonderful Town (1961), Of Mice and Men (1963) and Tobacco Road, (1965). He was often called upon to add his knowledge and concept of set design to members in various forms including written articles for the theatre newsletter.
As an actor, Stan’s roles included the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz (1951 and 1955), the Deaf-Mute in The Madwoman of Chaillot (1951), The Manager in Point of Departure (1953), Dr. Bird in The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial (1956) and Charles, the Dauphin in The Lark (1958).
Never afraid to take on a new challenge, in 1959 Stan accepted the difficult task of designing and overseeing the creation of the Theatre Under the Stairs in the basement of the old theatre – a new performance space with seating for 71 around a semi-circular stage. This unique space allowed for offbeat productions that gave Workshop members a place to experiment and develop away from the main stage.
Working with and for Stan White was always an exciting and sought-after experience.

2017 Inductees:

2017 - Val Bogan
Val Bogan made her OLT debut on the properties team for The Day They Kidnapped the Pope in 1988. After almost 90 productions in 30 seasons to date, it is possible that Val has been involved in a greater variety of positions than any other volunteer in OLT history, including key roles that require enormous time commitment and responsibility.
Volunteer positions over the years have included props designer and props crew, lighting crew, sound crew, wardrobe assistant, set dresser, prompter, stage crew and stage crew chief, fly operator, actor, assistant to the director, assistant stage manager, deputy stage manager, associate director, and director.
Val has been a committee chair (Eastern Ontario Drama League Spring Play Festival in 2012, marking the first time the OLT had hosted this full-length play festival since the 1960s), committee member (OLT’s 100th season celebrations in 2012-2013, and OLT Volunteer Committee) and served on the Board of Directors for twelve years (portfolios included Membership, Volunteers, Secretary-Treasurer, and School of the Theatre).
Val made her directorial debut in 2004 with Gallery. She returned to directing with The Perils of Persephone in 2014, The Mouse House in 2016, and Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Jersey Lily in 2018.
Val has even made brief appearances on the other side of the footlights in The Man Who Came to Dinner (1989), An Enemy of the People (1992), and Lettice and Lovage (1995).
2017 - Kevin Conlon
Kevin Conlon came to Ottawa in 1954 from Dublin, Ireland, bringing an impressive resume in amateur drama from Ireland’s famed Mercury Theatre including three festival acting awards.
In his three-plus decades at the Ottawa Little Theatre, Kevin performed in 38 productions and directed another 16, including Workshop productions (he served briefly on its Board) and Theatre for Children. He also worked behind the scenes on sound, on set design and construction, and front of house. From 1954 until the 1970 fire that destroyed the original building, he painted a billboard mounted on the outside of the theatre for every show.
Kevin debuted at OLT as the Reverend Mr. Hale in The Crucible in 1955. At the opening of the new theatre in 1972, Kevin performed the title role in Hadrian the Seventh, prompting the Ottawa Journal reviewer to say: “Conlon’s performance was – and will probably remain – one of the best I have seen on any Ottawa stage.” He also sang and danced in several musicals including a Shakespeare-singing gangster in Kiss me Kate in 1965. Later roles included an outstanding performance of the title role in Da in 1981.
Productions he directed included Voices of Desire, The Hollow, Look Back in Anger, Gaslight and The Price.
In the wider theatre community of Ottawa, Kevin was Head of Drama at St. Patrick’s College for more than six years, teaching and mounting very successful student productions each year. He was Drama Director for the RA (the Gov’t Recreation Association), and appeared with the Irish Society and numerous other Ottawa theatre groups. He also performed professionally at Le Hibou in Ottawa, the Library Theatre in Toronto, and the Citadel in Edmonton.
Kevin and his wife Liz, another active OLT volunteer, retired to Victoria in 1987.
2017 - Jim Hogan
Jim Hogan joined the staff of the OLT as Stage Manager in 2001, but for over 25 years prior to that, he was a backstage volunteer.
Jim has been Sound Designer for approximately 70 shows, and when he wasn’t designing, he was frequently on the sound crew, filling one or the other role for as many as eight productions in a year! Jim switched from Sound to Lighting Design on one show only: Children in 1980. And he ventured to the other side of the footlights once for a cameo appearance as Brother Jim in Nunsense in 2002.
Jim served on the Board of Directors from 1988 until 2000, first handling the portfolio of Technical: Sound and Light, and then becoming 2nd Vice President and 1st Vice President: Publicity and Marketing.
After the OLT added a Sunday matinee in 2005, Jim and his wife Nancy began preparing and hosting a brunch for the cast and crew of every production as a volunteer activity in his stage management role. Jim is also known for embellishing his 30-minute show-calls with a quiz that is ingeniously related to the theme of each play, with the answers coming at the 15-minute call.
And to reward outstanding (and sometimes less heralded) service from the backstage crew, Jim created the “Hogan’s Heroes Award” which he presents to a deserving winner each crew night in the form of an embroidered sports shirt.
Jim Hogan has been the cheery, smiling heart of the Ottawa Little Theatre for closing in on 50 years.
2017 - John Mark Keyes
John Mark Keyes made his debut at the Ottawa Little Theatre in 1986 as Valère in Tartuffe, the first of several roles including Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Edgar Linton in Wuthering Heights, The Duke of York in Crown Matrimonial, and the Reverend John Hale in The Crucible. Later roles were Seigneur Anselm in The Miser in 2008 and Boolie Werthan in Driving Miss Daisy in 2014.
John Mark, a lawyer in the Justice Department by day, joined the Board of Directors in 1993 and started off heading the Endowment Fund Committee. He became Treasurer (sometimes Secretary-Treasurer) from 1994 to 1998 and again from 2004 to 2012. In this vital role, he set the platinum standard for accounting and put into place sound financial policies that continue to be followed. In 2012 John Mark was appointed President of the OLT Board of Directors serving until 2016. Throughout difficult periods of restructuring; the theatre’s successful celebration of our 100th anniversary season; the launch of the Capital Building Campaign, and major renovations to the building that followed, he remained a rock-solid leader – always putting the best interests of the Theatre at the forefront, and treating colleagues at all levels with respect and compassion.
2017 - Jane Morris
Jane Morris has had a connection with the Ottawa Little Theatre her entire life, first through her mother, Maggie Morris, who performed in the old theatre in the 1950s, then after moving to Toronto through close family friends (previous Cornerstone Inductees, Sybil and Douglas Cooke) and then as an actor. Since moving back to Ottawa and making her OLT debut in Not Now, Darling in 1978, Jane has performed in 35 shows in 40 seasons. Favourite productions include Table Manners, Major Barbara, Noises Off, Grace and Glorie, Snake in the Grass, The Memory of Water (EODL nomination for Best Actress), Calendar Girls and Other Desert Cities (CCC Best Production winner, and Best Actress nomination).
After retiring from her day job in Communications and Marketing at the National Arts Centre, Jane became involved behind the scenes at the OLT. She was on the Board of Directors from 2010 to 2015. She joined the Season Planning Committee in 2010 and became its chair in 2012 leading her team in reading from 65 to 85 scripts a year before selecting each season of plays and directors.
Jane has been a member of the Volunteer Committee since 2009 and of the Archive Committee since 2011. In the latter role she played a major role in cataloguing and digitizing the theatre’s photo collection; she researched and verified the theatre’s play history of over a thousand plays. And most recently she launched a searchable online database of the casts and crews of all those plays which can be visited on the OLT website.

2016 Inductees:

The Hon. Kenneth Binks, whose family has lived in the Ottawa area for well over 120 years, was a Progressive Conservative party member in the House of Commons and a respected member of the Ottawa legal community. In 1991 he was appointed a Judge of the General Division, now Superior Court of the Province of Ontario. He retired from the Superior Court in 2000 and joined the firm of Beament Green as Counsel. Judge Binks is the author of Canada’s Parliamentary Library, published in 1979, and a member of the Canadian Bar Association, The International Bar Association, The Advocates Society, The National Press Club and The Cambridge Union.
A great supporter of the arts and an active member of the Ottawa Little Theatre Board of Directors at the time of the devastating fire in 1970 that destroyed the theatre, Ken Binks was appointed Chair of the Fundraising Committee that was immediately formed to re-build the theatre. He led the very successful campaign with great expertise and passion and was personally responsible for raising a notable amount of funds. As such, his role was important in achieving the construction of the new theatre which opened a mere two years later in 1972, and was fully paid off after only another five years.
Ken remained a respected Board member for many years afterwards. His significant financial contributions to the theatre continue to this day in support of the evolving development and growth of OLT. This contribution is currently made in honour of his late wife, Jean, who shared his love for this theatre.

Douglas Cooke
Douglas Cooke, born in Canada in 1926 and raised in England, began his naval career just before the end of World War II rising from the lower ranks to become at one point the youngest officer in the Canadian Navy. He became involved in the Ottawa Little Theatre, along with his wife Sybil Cooke, in 1954 continuing until the 2000s. Douglas acted, directed, was a sound designer, ran sound and lights, and greeted patrons at the front of house. As a member of the Board of Directors for over 15 years, he earned the theatre a healthy profit “mustering” the bar. He stage-managed the OLT’s highly successful Children’s Theatre in the 1960s taking productions to schools around the city. In the late 80s, he developed the OLT’s first computerized ticketing system which the theatre used for almost a decade.
As an actor, Douglas appeared in over twenty plays, including Sabrina Fair and Old Acquaintance (he directed AND acted in the latter) in the 50s; Anything Goes, Hostile Witness and Camelot in the 60s; A Man For All Seasons, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and The Case in Question in the 70s; A Christmas Carol (which was also filmed for TV), My Three Angels and A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the 80s, and his final play Lettice and Lovage in the 90s. In addition to Old Acquaintance he directed This Happy Breed (1957); The Mousetrap (1975) and Springtime for Henry (1986).
Douglas’s wife Sybil become President of the Ottawa Little Theatre from 1989 until she died of cancer in 1997. Douglas championed the Sybil Cooke Memorial Fund which is used to fund the Sybil Cooke Award presented to the winning play for children or youth in the OLT’s annual National One-Act Playwriting Competition.

Geoff Gruson001
Geoff Gruson made his acting debut at OLT in Rain in 1981 and his directing debut with Harvey in 1986. He has now been involved in well over 50 shows at OLT. In addition to his work as an actor and director, Gruson has served as assistant to the director, fight director, member of the Board of Directors for approximately 20 years, member of the Operations Committee, Chair of the Artistic Committee, and member of the Play Selection Committee.
Gruson is unwavering in his pursuit of high quality productions. Always putting the audience first, his priority is to give OLT audiences performances of the highest possible quality. He brings a wealth of experience from the professional world – both in management as well as in professional film, TV and stage, and Presidency of ACTRA – into the community theatre world of OLT. Although his interest in theatre is wide-ranging (he has been involved with other community theatres as well as professional ones), his heart is always with OLT.
Gruson has been an OLT leading man since 1981 but has also often played supporting roles on many occasions, and has stepped in at the last minute in an emergency. When he directs, his actors learn an enormous amount from his tireless insistence on achieving the best possible performances. He has also mentored up-and-coming directors.
His awards include the Capital Critics Circle Award for Best Community Theatre Production for Epic Proportions (2002), EODL Best Director for Deliver’d from Nowhere (2009), and EODL Best Creative and Inventive Blocking for Memory of Water (2010).
As a member of the Board of Directors, among many other things Gruson helped initiate and guide the strategic vision that transformed the OLT in 2008-2009. As Chair of the Artistic Committee he spear-headed plans to improve the quality of OLT’s stage productions.
Gruson received the Audrey Ashley Award from the Capital Critics Circle in the 2006-2007 season for outstanding contribution to theatre in Ottawa.
Johni Keyworth001
Johni Keyworth has been involved with OLT as an actor, a director, and in many other volunteary roles during six of the ten decades of the OLT’s first one hundred years
Keyworth is known primarily as an actor, having performed 8 principal roles in the 1960s, 10 in the 70s, 4 in the 80s, 6 in the 90s, 6 in the 2000s and 1 in the 2010s, as well as many supporting roles. In the same period, he has directed 17 productions at Ottawa Little Theatre.
In addition to his acting and directing, Keyworth is known for stepping wherever and whenever needed. He has designed and painted sets; designed sound and served as sound crew; stepped in at the last minute to run sound and lights in emergencies; built props; worked stage-crew; served as Front-of-House manager for a number of seasons; filled in at the box office; made telephone calls to unrenewed subscribers and stepped in for missing actors.
For three seasons in the 1970s he volunteered full-time for two or three weeks to assist in establishing computerised subscription renewals. He has led a number of annual Open House theatre tours in both the old and the new theatres; worked several seasons on the Subscription Renewals Desk; promoted and sold raffle tickets and Rotary Calendars for many seasons; done live pre-show promotional announcements; recorded a number of OLT radio promos; helped with “Spring Cleaning”; and reorganized the production photos display in the Green Room and backstage corridors.
Keyworth was involved in a number of projects to raise funds during the rebuilding of the theatre in the 1970s and served as a member of the Board of Directors for six years in the 2000s when the theatre management was reorganized. He has mentored actors and directors; taught for Learning @ OLT programs including A Play in a Day, Introduction to Acting and the Actor’s Gym; served as a dialect and voice coach; choreographed physical stunts; and served as Fight Captain.
In 2012 Keyworth received the Lieutentant Governor’s Community Volunteer Award for Services to OLT.
2013 - Henry Osborne
Colonel Henry Osborne was a member of the Ottawa Drama League (the name of the Ottawa Little Theatre until 1951) Board of Directors beginning in the 1920s, and served as Vice-President until 1947.
For much of the 1920s, he was one of the organization’s senior policy makers. This included his determination to move productions from “parish halls, obscure rooms, the Museum theatre [into] a theatre as good as Hart House in Toronto” (Love and Whiskey “The Story of the Dominion Drama Festival and the Early Years of Theatre in Canada” by Betty Lee). As a result, he was instrumental in the fundrasising, acquisition and renovation of the church on King Edward in 1927 which opened as a theatre in 1928.
When the Governor General, Lord Bessborough, dreamed of creating a national theatre festival in Canada, Osborne was invited and eagerly agreed to become one of its directors, and the Dominion Drama Festival was born. At the time he was Acting President of the Ottawa Drama League, and he became Vice-Chairman and Honorary Director of the Dominion Drama Festival (Love and Whiskey). The first Dominion Drama Festival was held at OLT in 1933 and OLT continued to host it for its first five years. Osborne remained on the Festival board until he passed away in 1949.

Having spent most of his free time at the Ottawa Drama League for decades, Osborne was honoured on his retirement from the ODL Board in 1947 for his “valuable contribution to the Drama League since its very early days [as] one of the prime organizers of the Dominion Drama Festival.” (Staging a Legend)
Outside of the Ottawa Drama League Osborne, after serving in WWI, became secretary-general of the Canadian Agency, Imperial War Graves Commission, the organization which was responsible for overseeing the design and building of several war memorials in Europe, including the Canadian National Vimy War Memorial erected in France.
Robin Riddihough001
Beginning with The Nerd in 1989, Robin Riddihough has designed 52 sets for OLT. His most recent sets, in the 2014-2015 season, were for Clybourne Park (nominated for a Capital Critics Circle Outstanding Design Award) and Breaking the Code. Over his history at OLT, Riddihough’s set designs have been recognized with four Capital Critics Circle Awards and two Eastern Ontario Drama League Visual Awards.
Riddihough is a gifted and prolific set designer, but he also generously contributed ten years of work on OLT’s Board of Directors from2001-2011 where he served a President from 2003-2008. He has served on a wide variety of committees both while on the board and subsequently. He currently chairs the Archive Committee which recently submitted OLT’s substantive collection of 100 years of material to the City of Ottawa Archives where it will continue to be available OLT, but will also be available to the general public.
Riddihough also currently sits on OLT’s Capital Projects Committee which is overseeing the $1,000,000 Renew the Building Project. Other committees he has served on in the past include Operations, Volunteer, Season Planning, Nominating, Strategic Review and Communications Committees. He has donated his facilitation skills to several Board Strategic Planning sessions and spearheaded a review of OLT’s Vision and Mission in 2011.
Riddihough has also been generous in sharing his skills as a designer with others. He led the Learning @ OLT workshop Set Design for Community Theatre in 2011, and has mentored two new set designers for OLT. In addition, he curated and assembled “100 Years of Set Design at the Ottawa Little Theatre” for OLT’s 100th Anniversary. This exhibit was placed on display in the Besserer Wing of the OLT’s lobby as part of the 100th Season Exhibits and then moved to the Bytown Museum in 2013. It was reassembled and displayed at the Canadian Institute of Theatre Technicians Annual Conference in 2014.
Riddihough helped found the Ottawa Community Theatre Association and served as its Chair for several years, acting as OLT’s representative at meetings. He has also designed sets for several other community theatres in the City.

2014 - Amelia Hall
(b.1916-d.1984)
Amelia Hall worked with Ottawa Little Theatre (then known as the Ottawa Drama League) from 1939-1949 as an actor, director, member of the Workshop Play Production Committee (and later President of this project), member of the Board of Directors and Co-Founder of OLT’s Children’s Theatre. After honing her skills at OLT, she went on to an illustrious career as a professional actor, becoming the first woman to act on the Stratford Festival Stage when it opened in 1953 (in Stratford’s opening production of Richard III opposite Alec Guiness), founding The Canadian Repertory Theatre in Ottawa, Canada’s first post-war professional theatre, and appearing with other seminal Canadian Theatres such as the Crest Theatre in Toronto and the Montreal Repertory Theatre. Her professional career continued into the 1980s and she was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 1982 for her services to theatre arts in Canada.
Len Holt001
(b.1919-d.1975)
Originally from England, Len Holt arrived at the Ottawa Little Theatre in 1956, after spending three years in Kenora. He contributed to OLT as an actor, director, President of the Workshop and as a member of the Board of Directors. His first role was as Doolittle in George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion in 1956. A teacher by trade, Holt played a key role in the rebuilding of the Ottawa Little Theatre after the great fire in 1970. Charged with directing the first play to appear in the newly built theatre (Hadrian VII which opened in January 1972), his enthusiasm, drive, positive attitude and personal charm played a major role in pulling the new theatre into being on time for Opening Night. From weekly breakfasts with Mike Lundy, the contractor building the new theatre, to using his own technical skills to ensure the new lighting board, grid, curtain, sound system and seats all met the artistic needs of the theatre, Holt helped make the theatre what it is today. Holt passed away suddenly from a heart attack in 1975, just three years after the new theatre opened successfully. He was 56 years old, and twenty of those years had been spent at Ottawa Little Theatre.

Barbara Meiklejohn (pictured here in Separate Tables, 1959) was an actor and director at Ottawa Little Theatre. Her first appearance on the OLT stage was in 1938 in a play called Libel and her last was in 1964 when she appeared in three plays, The Tinderbox, The Miracle Worker and The Ideal Husband. Meiklejohn ran OLT’s School for Theatre from the late 1950s into the 1960s teaching alumni such as Saul Rubinek, Tim Bond, and Bob Dermer. She directed many of the School for Theatre productions which toured into Ottawa high schools on Saturdays featuring both adults and young people in the cast, introducing Ottawa’s teenagers to their first taste of theatre both onstage and in the audience and instilling a love of the craft of theatre in the next generation. Meiklejohn and her husband Michael Meiklejohn (who was inducted onto the Cornerstone in 2013) moved to Victoria, British Columbia, in 1965, where they continued to be involved with theatres for many years.

Joe O'Brien001
Joe O’Brien began his affair with the Ottawa Little Theatre in the 1950s as a regular member of the Saturday Players, acting and working backstage in OLT’s Theatre for Children productions. He has since acted in 21 productions and directed 18 plays and 2 musicals, even though he took a hiatus from the theatre while serving as the City of Ottawa’s Director of Culture. O’Brien has the distinction of directing two significant productions fifty years apart – Take Me Along, the musical that opened the theatre’s 50th Anniversary Season in 1962, and A.A.Milne’s Mr. Pim Passes By, OLT’s first decade offering in its 100th Anniversary Season Celebrations which included productions of one play from each decade of its history. O’Brien has served multiple terms on the OLT Board of Directors, including a term as its President in the 1990s. He currently represents the theatre on the Ottawa Community Theatre Association and the Eastern Ontario Drama League. O’Brien was the 2013 recipient of Theatre Ontario’s Michael Spence Award bestowed upon “an individual for his/her outstanding contribution to community theatre in his/her region over a sustained time, including a generosity of spirit, involvement, and commitment to community theatre that is legendary within his/her region.”

2013 - William Adkins
For generations of actors and backstage crew, William (Bill) Adkins was the face of the Ottawa Little Theatre (OLT). He was introduced in the early 20s to what was then the Ottawa Drama League (ODL) by his boss at the Department of Indian Affairs, Duncan Campbell Scott, who for ten years was President of the ODL Board of Directors. Adkins began as a backstage volunteer and in 1928 became the theatre’s stage manager. When he retired from the Civil Service in 1953, he turned to stage management full-time, a position he held at the Ottawa Little Theatre until 1979 when he was 90 years old. For well over a half century, Adkins did whatever was required to ensure that the “show would go on”: setting props, moving furniture, lights, sound, everything, as well as mentoring decades of stage crews. He was here when the ODL acquired the Eastern Methodist Church on King Edward at Rideau and turned it into a theatre in 1928, and was still here when – following the fire of 1970 – a new theatre was built and opened on the same site in 1972 where it continues to this day.Bill Adkins received the Order of Canada from Governor General Roland Michener on December 28, 1972, for his tremendous contribution to theatre.
Sybil Cooke002
Sybil Cooke and her husband Douglas began their involvement at the Ottawa Little Theatre in 1954. Sybil remained continuously active, apart from hiatuses for Douglas’s naval postings to Halifax and Pennsylvania, until 1997. Sybil Cooke began as an actor in the 50s, and then in the 60s directed three Theatre for Children productions and was Assistant to the Director for a number of musicals including The Centennial Play in 1967. After returning from Pennsylvania in 1972, she began a long run of directing at least one production per year for a total of 28, almost always in collaboration with set designer Leslie Hutchins. Favorites included The Sunshine Boys with Bill Luxton and Les Lye (1976), The Madwoman of Chaillot (1977), The Admirable Crichton (1978), Glasstown (1980), The Man Who Came to Dinner (1980), Talley’s Folly (1984), Tartuffe (1986), Amadeus (1988), Beyond Reasonable Doubt with Sen. Royce Frith (1991), and Pride and Prejudice (1997). As a director, Sybil had a keen eye for casting and would often cast in her plays newcomers to the OLT who would later become regular OLT volunteers, including now longtime actor/director/board member Geoff Gruson, and actor/OLT President John Mark Keyes. Sybil Cooke succeeded Jane Murray as President of the Ottawa Little Theatre in 1989 and continued in that position until her death in 1997.
2013 - Elizabeth Cruikshank001 (1)
The Ottawa Drama League’s first season culminated in an evening of one-act plays in June 1914. The cast included Mrs. Dwight P. Cruikshank and it was the first of her many appearances on the theatre’s stage. In the 1920s, after the ODL had been performing in borrowed spaces for years, Elizabeth (Betty) Cruikshank who was by then Second Vice President of the Board, successfully chaired the fundraising campaign to buy the ODL a home of its own. The $75,000 needed to purchase the Eastern Methodist Church at Rideau and King Edward was obtained by selling $25 mortgage bonds “person to person”. She also travelled to the theatre at Yale University to research the lighting panel that was eventually installed in the new theatre. Betty Cruikshank was still around in 1970 to see that hard-fought-for building burn to the ground, and she was a strong supporter of the rebuilding campaign. She attended the opening of the new building in 1972 and every season thereafter until her death in 1979 at age 96.
2013 - Flo Fancott
Florence Fancott was the leading lady of over sixty Ottawa Little Theatre productions from 1949 to 1983. Flo’s award-winning theatre career began in England where at one point she worked with Errol Flynn before moving to Ottawa post-war with her architect husband Ted Fancott. Her prolific OLT career encompassed the theatre’s standard repertoire as well as many Workshop productions (the more experimental fare) and earned her a number of EODL awards. She directed the first of approximately 20 productions in 1971, sharing with cast and crew her discipline and vast knowledge of dramatic interpretation. Flo Fancott was a member of the National Playwriting Competition Committee together with Gladys Cameron Watt and Marion Bray advancing its status from 1975 to 1983. She organized the Christmas Raffle in 1978 and regularly did cloakroom duty. Flo Fancott was a mentor, teacher, coach, advisor, supporter and pillar of the theatre, always generous with her advice to and mentorship of new performers.
2013 - WE Fancott
William Edmund (Ted) Fancott was the designer of approximately 50 Ottawa Little Theatre sets from 1949 to 1990, including building and painting many of them, plus dozens of others at Orpheus and other local theatres. He was also President of the Workshop in the 1950s. An architect, whose designs include the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill, Ted Fancott was a member of the OLT’s Board of Directors from the 1950s to 80s where he was on the Building Committee in charge of facilities. This included overseeing the extensive renovation of the original lobby in 1968. After the catastrophic fire that destroyed that theatre in 1970, Ted Fancott was the architect responsible for the design of the present building which opened in 1972. His intimate knowledge of the theatre allowed him to solve many of the previous space and logistical problems thus offering volunteers and theatre-goers an incredible new home which is still enjoyed to this day.

Bill Glenn (pictured here as the Spectre in The Innocents, 1954) was an actor, director, producer, costume designer, teacher and all-round artistic leader at Ottawa Little Theatre from the 1940s to the mid 1960s. He then moved on to a highly successful professional career in Hollywood, including directing The Young and the Restless for nine years. Bill Glenn’s influence at the OLT as a director and designer is legendary, particularly through his involvement with the Theatre for Children which he took over in 1954 after apprenticing under its founding team. Hundreds of youth under his care flourished artistically, attained personal growth and moved forward in their lives with superior skills and confidence. Every participant got the chance to grace the stage or work behind the scenes including Rich Little, Saul Rubinek and Tim Bond who all went on to professional careers. When Bill Glenn was inducted into the Palm Springs Walk of Stars, he declared: “My life started at OLT. Thank you.”

Michael Mieklejohn was a major contributor to the Ottawa Drama League/Ottawa Little Theatre for close to 30 years from – apart from a hiatus to serve in World War II – 1930 to 1965, contributing as an actor and stagehand, and later as play director, committee member and chair. In 1965, he and his wife Barbara Meiklejohn, also a star actor, director and adjudicator, moved to Victoria where Michael became a pioneer historian in Canadian theatre, conducting and audio-taping interviews with literally dozens of key figures in the development of Canadian theatre before and just after World War II. Michael Mieklejohn, a passionate supporter of Canadian playwrights, co-founded the ODL Workshop with Julia Murphy and Eric Strangroom in 1936 and was its President in 1946. He was Governor of the Dominion Drama Festival from 1948 to 1958 and Vice Chair of the EODL in 1951. He was President of the OLT from 1956 to 1958 having frequently served as a member of the Board of Directors throughout his time in Ottawa. As a theatre educator (Theatre Consultant for Department of National Health and Welfare) he spread the name of the Ottawa Drama League across Canada. His expertise was legendary and he became one of Canada’s most influential leaders of community theatre and theatre education during its formative years in this country. In 1950 Michael Meiklejohn was named recipient of the Canadian Drama Award, a national award recognizing outstanding contributions to Canadian theatre.

Mrs. James K. Murray’s involvement with the Ottawa Little Theatre began as an actress in the mid-1950s in productions including Old Acquaintance, The Madwoman of Chaillot, The Mountain and The Rehearsal, during which time she was also a member of the OLT Workshop’s Board of Directors. In the 1960s Jane Murray joined the OLT Board of Directors and in 1964 became its President, a position she held until 1989, a period crucial to the theatre’s development. She was in charge during the $68,000 campaign for major renovations to the old theatre in 1968, and then after the fire of 1970 she spearheaded with Len Holt and Kenneth Binks the fundraising campaign to raise $750,000 to build the new theatre which opened in 1972; its mortgage was paid off within five years. Under Jane Murray’s leadership, play-runs expanded from five nights to three weeks of nine to ten plays per season, and the membership list grew to the point where it was almost impossible to buy a season subscription or a ticket to a play. Supported throughout by her husband, James K. (Jim) Murray, Jane Murray’s mantra was to provide a venue for volunteers to explore their passion for the theatre and in turn provide quality entertainment for the citizens of Ottawa. On April 25, 1979 Jane Murray was presented with the Order of Canada by Governor General Ed Schreyer for her work with the Ottawa Little Theatre.

2013 - Gladys Watt
Mrs. Gladys Cameron Watt’s involvement with the Ottawa Drama League began in 1937, the same year that the theatre’s annual National One-Act Playwriting Competition was founded by Alison Hardy. Gladys Watt became Chairman of the Playwriting Competition in 1949 and for the next 25 years was instrumental in advancing the state of and changing the public’s indifference to Canadian playwriting. She sought to make each edition of the Competition better than the last, pushing it to the national level, tirelessly publicizing, seeking out prominent theatre professionals as adjudicators, and organizing the presentation of prizes. She won a Canada Council grant in 1958 to assist in printing the ranking plays for wider distribution, the same year as she received the Canadian Drama Award as a personal tribute to her outstanding efforts. By 1958, more than 70 of the 1,200 Canadian Plays submitted to the competition had been produced for the first time on the OLT Workshop stage. In 1963, Gladys Cameron Watt was presented with the Margo Jones Award by Lady Bird Johnson, First Lady of the United States, for her impact on encouraging live theatre. She won the Centennial Medal in 1967, and in 1973 she was awarded the Order of Canada for a quarter century of service to playwrights. The third prize in the OLT National Playwriting Competition, which is donated by the Canadian Federation of University Women, was renamed the Gladys Cameron Watt Award in her honour following her death in 1979. It continues to be awarded annually.
2013 - Dorothy White
Dorothy White’s career at the Ottawa Drama League began on the stage of the Russell Theatre in the early 1920s. For the next four decades she worked tirelessly as an actor, director, and backstage helper. As administrator, she ran the theatre office and was one of the theatre’s chief policy makers. As Secretary and then Vice President of the Board, Dorothy White helped with the fundraising campaign to purchase the ODL a home of its own and had the honour of reciting the Prologue, written by famed Canadian poet and ODL President Duncan Campbell Scott, at its opening in 1928. She was one of the Drama League’s first amateur play directors (the ODL originally hired professionals) and was the first ODL director to win Best Production at the Dominion Drama Festival for French Without Tears in 1938. President of the Dominion Drama Festival and adjudicator of the National Playwriting Competition, Dorothy White mentored decades of Ottawa theatre amateurs. She was a “guide and friend of the Children’s Theatre”. As William Cromarty, ex-President of OLT, wrote in a 1956 Newsletter: “When one thinks of the Little Theatre, one thinks immediately of Dorothy White, for, as a shrewd playgoer has observed, Dorothy White is the Little Theatre. The 2nd Prize of OLT’s National Playwriting Competition is still named in honour of Dorothy White.

The Cornerstone sculpture plays upon the transformative power of props to create an ever-changing world on the stage. The work celebrates the many volunteers who dedicate their time to bringing imaginary worlds to life. The individuals and the props they engage with are akin to ShapeShifters, as they manoeuvre, grow and change their environment in the creation of live Theatre.  Appearing on the work are the names of volunteers who have made an extraordinary contribution to the development of the Ottawa Little Theatre since it was founded in 1913 – the human cornerstones of its success.
