The word SWAG has always been associated with special events. One definition of the word is Stuff We All Get (SWAG) and can be seen on the arms of celebrities at such star filled galas as the Oscars and the Emmys. Companies are always vying to get their products included in these bags. The opportunity to have your product toted around by a famous person is priceless in terms of publicity.

The Ottawa Little Theatre has its own SWAG which stands for Special Wardrobe Advisory Group. Although not as glamorous as the SWAG bag carried by Angelina Jolie, in many ways the OLT SWAG is just as special if not more.

Under the leadership of Nancy Hogan, the team consisting of Ann, Anne, Barbara, Betty, Cheryl, Denise, Donna, Fran, Gil, Gillian, Glynis, Helen, Jane, Jeanne, Jennifer, Liza, Mary, Monica, Sandra, Sarah Sophie, and Wanda
work tirelessly throughout the year to sort and cull the OLT’s extensive costume collection and to organize and assist at Wardrobe Sales. The inventory of costumes is breathtaking and impressive occupying two floors of a vast wardrobe department. Does one of OLT’s productions need a 17th century French gown? Done ! How about a 1960’s hippy vest ? We’ve got that too. Not only do we have it in our inventory, the SWAG team can find it for our designers in minutes. We are talking about finding one article amongst over 2000 pieces. In addition, some of the vintage costumes have to be meticulously restored and many of the team members have the necessary skills as seamstresses to get the job expertly done.

The team, possessing a knowledge and interest in the history of costumes also has the ability to plan and strategize.  These are two important skills given the fine line they have to walk between what to keep for potential use in a future play and what to part with today in order to keep the inventory down to a more manageable level.

The costumes that need a new home are offered to the public in an annual sale. The next OLT Wardrobe, Vintage, Costume and Props Sale will be held Saturday October 5, 2019 from 10:00 am – 2:30. Access by the stage door 235 Besserer.

The timing for the event is perfect. The cold weather is approaching and a beautiful vintage warm coat could be available for sale. Halloween is at the end of the month and you are looking for that particular piece to complete the costume. School is back in session and costumes are needed for this year’s future potential Cappies winner. There is definitely something for everyone.

One final note. The SWAG Team also provides a loan service to the theatre community where costumes are (with a refundable deposit) available to other productions showing across the city.

All proceeds from the sale go to supporting the OLT general operations. For more information, please consult our website at ottawalittletheatre.com
